A trendy photographers studio in the heart of Surrey, A new face with hot potential on the plus size modelling scene and a pile of the best plus size clothes from Curvety.com - what a day! Yes, it was Curvety's first ever photo shoot. Our model competition was a huge success with many applicants from across the Country, but the winner stood out from the crowd with her amazing curvy figure & stunningly memorable looks -welcome Olivia Campbell. The day started with a rummage through the looks to find the key pieces to picture, while the make up artist transformed our new model into a sultry sex goddess. Photographer, Chantal Storrs Barbor of Cherry red studios, was responsible for shortlisting the applicants and on the day helped to put Olivia at ease while clicking away. Within minutes you could see that she is a true natural with striking presence. Do you need some professional shots for your portfolio?

Curvety are looking for a budding plus size model to take part in our first ever photo shoot.

It will be great experience for someone who is looking to break into plus size modelling and will give you some lovely pictures for your portfolio. You will need to be able to travel to Camberley, Surrey for the shoot and we will pay your travel expenses. We will also supply images on a disc for you to use to promote yourself.

We are looking for someone who is a size 16/18 and is well proportioned. You will need to be 5ft 7" or taller, however for the right look this is flexible so feel free to send over your shots if you don't quite match this criteria!

Gastric Band is it the Answer?

It seems to me that there is an increase in the use of gastric bands in the UK, following a trend of the operation in the US.

My question is - is it the answer?

There is no question that there are overweight people in the UK who are significantly unhappy with their weight, or suffer from medical conditions which make weight loss a necessity. In these cases it is of course important to address the issue and try to slim. In my opinion this is usually due to an unhealthy diet, lack of execise and an unhealthy relationship with food - will a drastic operation solve these problems? In some cases maybe, but I feel that it is now becoming common place and seen as a quick fix by the medical profession where other measures should be taken first.

Will this put further pressure on the public to conform and feel they have to reach the "accepted" size?

Curvy women shouldn't feel pressured to conform and lose weight if they are healthy, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet and are confident with their curves. One size certainly doesn't fit all!

There is also a growing trend in the US for the operation to be performed on young teens, bodies which aren't yet fully developed & minds which are young enough to be re trained towards a healthier relationship with food. I think it would be a terrible shame for the UK to follow suit.

Size Zero is not on Vogue

Possibly the most powerful woman in UK fashion has spoken out about the use of super skinny models in magazine shoots with a strong worded letter to fashion designers.

The editor of Vogue, Alexandra Shulman, has reportedly given them a roasting for making sample sizes so small that she has to seek out the most emaciated of models, and then Photoshop them back to health for publication in her magazine.

It’s official: being ultra-thin is no longer in vogue.

To have someone at the heart of the fashion press declare war on extreme thinness is a great victory for real women everywhere, but is only one small step in the fight against the madness of the size zero trend. It is a far cry from seeing a curvy size 16 gracing the front pages of such titles on a regular basis, but it is one of many small victories which suggest a slow change in the thinking of the fashion sector.

Anyone who has been following the new series of Goks Fashion Fix on Channel 4, will know that they are road testing various outfits on a range of plus size women, the Rotheram Roadtesters.

This week jeans were put to the test and had to face the challenge of riding a rodeo bull! The size 28 jeans worn by Lucy were the reverie jeans from Curvety.com. Lucy scored the jeans a solid 7 for their comfort and stretch - a good result for larger women's denim.

Farewell Jade

I am genuinely upset by the sad news of this weekend. I am a similar age to Jade and feel, as many do, that I knew her due to her life played out in the public eye. It also definitely reminds you of your own mortality.

The British public have had a love hate relationship with Jade Goody over the years but nobody can deny that her time in the public eye has been eventful and in many ways inspiring.

The young girl with a lot of heart & soul, but not famed for her intelligence. From day one Jade was determined to work her 5 minutes of fame, and work it she did. How many other BB entrants can claim to have had her success? If you ask me that takes a savvy and determination that not many can boast.

Jade has had highs and lows and was never embarassed to live her life in front of the camera. She really gave all to the British public which is why some found her so endearing and others found her hard to stomach. Whatever your views there is no doubt that she was a devoted mother, who even in her last days and hours, was determined to provide for her children and give them a start in life that she wasnt lucky enough to receive.

Whatever you personal view on Ms Goody, it is a sad day when a young woman departs the world leaving two young children, and a life left unlived. Cancer is tragic in any circumstance, and plagues most families at one time or another, but when one so young is not spared it really makes you think. Lets hope that Jade's legacy is a greater understanding of this terrible disease, and that her tragic story played out in the public eye will be responsible for saving the lives of other young women throughout the UK.

My heart goes out to Jade's family and her two boys.

Plus Size Model Hopes

School girl Naomi Durden lead a normal teen life & had dreams of becoming a model when at 15 a shock stroke changed everything.

During one lunch break Naomi suddenly collapsed. She had suffered a stroke.

'I suddenly felt tense and agitated, then everything when black,” she recalls.

“My friends said my whole body was twitching and fitting. They were absolutely petrified.”

A few days later Naomi was told she had a 1cm hole in her heart which docs feared could have sparked her seizure. She was to spend a whole year in hopsital.

“I was hooked and wired up to every machine going and I had no feeling in my right arm or leg – it was really frightening,' she said.

“My family were all around me and my hospital phone was ringing every five minutes with worried friends bursting into tears.

“It was like a nightmare I just couldn’t wake from. The doctors said I might never walk again, as the paralysis in my left side was deemed permanent.'

But Naomi was determined to prove the doctors wrong and with help from supportive family, within six months Naomi had recovered enough to sit her GCSEs in a special hospital room, managing seven passes despite having no time to study.

While the slender teenager had her heart set on a modelling career, the hospital-bound Naomi had put on weight and found herself at a size twenty.

“I was on medication that affected my glands and the way I burned fat,' she told us.

'I couldn’t even move while my side was paralysed and I comfort ate too.

'I woke up one morning and realised I was overweight, unhappy and frightened – modelling seemed a distant dream.”

It wasn’t until the beginning of 2008 that Naomi, who was working as a customer services officer for her local government, realised the problem. She split with her previous controlling partner and met a new man at work.

“He changed my life completely. After everything I had been through – I needed someone to support me in every way – and he is perfect.”

Thanks to Darren’s love of healthy cooking and the gym in her parents' garden, 20-year-old Naomi has slimmed to a size 16. She is back to a clean bill of health and has rediscovered her modelling dream.

“A friend sent me details of the Britain’s Next Plus size Model and after what I had been through, I thought: 'Why not?'”

Naomi sent off four recent shots in December 2008 to Just As Beautiful Magazine, who were hosting the competition a few months later. After weeks of not hearing anything, Naomi assumed she hadn’t got through and got on with her life.

“Just after Christmas, I got email saying I was through to the final and had beaten 500 other girls, I was speechless.”

Naomi would compete against 12 other plus-size models in various catwalk shows and interviews in a bid to be named Britain’s Next Plus size Model.

While Naomi didn’t scoop the winning prize, the experience has been the ultimate dream ending to her previous living nightmare.

She adds: “I thought I would be worrying about my wobbly arms and tummy, but as soon as I stepped out on the catwalk, I felt beautiful.

“When I found out I hadn’t won, it didn’t affect me like it did the other girls – they were crying in the toilets or storming off home, while I went and cheered when the winner claimed her prize – I was genuinely pleased for her.

“For me, the experience wasn’t about winning. The fact that I even stood on that stage was proof that the unachievable can be achieved.”

And while Naomi’s modelling dreams are still very much alive, she has no plans to slim down in order to get there.

“I love food and drink and although I’m a lot healthier now, I’d never give it up!

“I wouldn’t want to get any smaller than a size 12-14. I am a curvy girl, and that’s the way I like it.”

America's new first lady has also acquired another new title courtesy of the Washington Post: the leader of the fashionable world.

So why so much interest in Mrs Obama's wardrobe?

Michelle is young, tall and attractive which stands her apart from previous first ladies, but there is more to it than that. She represents hope & change as much as the new president himself.

For the ceremony she dressed herself and her daughters in glorious & vibrant colour. Her daring green gold ensemble was striking, a complete contrast to the expected.

But more telling than the outfits themselves is the names behind them. Michelle's coat and dress for the ceremony were by Isabel Toledo, a 47-year-old Cuban-American designer who is well known to fashion insiders but has almost no profile among the public. Her evening gown, a one-shoulder ivory gown, was by Jason Wu, a 26-year-old Taipei-born, American-based designer. Another who is known only to those who keep a close eye on 'the ones to watch' in fashion magazines.

The year is drawing to a close and what a year it's been!

2008 has seen the size acceptance movement fall into full swing and real women everywhere are learning to accept and be proud of their curves. They are demanding a voice in both the public domain and in the retail sector & the choice of plus size clothes has never been so great.

The rise of size acceptance has seen an increase of curvy women in the world of celebrity, those rare role models who refuse to bow to the pressure of life in the limelight as a curvy women.

As 2008 wraps up I wanted to celebrate my top 3 curvy role models of the year...

Chloe Marshall has to be my number 1 curvy celebrity in 2008. Her stirling work in raising awareness of the sexiness of curves earlier in the year when coming second in the Miss England final was monumental. Chloe is a beautiful young woman and the UK really got behind her.

In second place has to be Beth Ditto, who has won the admiration of women across the world for her attitude and daring dress sense. Beth knows how to steal the show, and proves to the world that you dont need to be a size 0 to do it. BTW - love the new orange hair Beth!

In third place it has to be Adele, just because I love her. She is my favourite by far of the new singing talents of 2008. when I first heard her voice it gave me goose bumps, so I was doubly pleased when I found out she was proud to be a curvy woman.

There have been many sad stories of celebritites who have suffered at the hands of the size stigma in the UK - such as Fern Britton and Natalie Cassidy.

Here's to a 2009 which celebrates the beauty of the female form in all its wonderful variations, and where celebrities and normal women alike can feel confident of who they are without being judged.

Bigger Women Have Better Sex Lives

A recent study has shown that plus size women have better sex lives than their slimmer counterparts and the Mirror are keen to shout it from the roof tops by way of an article on sexy BBW's who rule in the bedroom.

A freelance journalist has been commissioned to write a feature for the women's section of the Mirror and has asked me to help find some sexy case studies.

A new study has revealed that bigger women get more sex than their slimmer sisters which rubbishes previous studies which concluded that larger girls had a low libido, while skinny ones were more likely to be sexually active.

Gail is writing a feature on larger women who say that although they get may get sneering looks from other women about their size, they literally have to fight men off. She is looking for women who are a size 18 or above and perfectly happy with their bodies and their sex lives.

Case studies will attend a professional photo shoot in London where they'll have their hair and make up done by professionals. All stories will be read back before submission.

Slated in the papers for her fast weight regain, is Natalie really to blame?

Recently slated across magazines and countless internet sites, Natalie Cassidy has been seen back up to her original weight. Is she really to blame or is this ridiculous obsession to be stick thin the reason for her plummet and quick regain. Realistically no-one could have believed someone who is clearly naturally curvy to stay a size 8. She is being quoted as being depressed and in tears about her weight gain and im sure all of the bad press coverage isn’t helping her. It’s a waste of time to spend every second calorie counting and watching what you eat she should enjoy her life and enjoy her success but instead she is being made to feel fat and ugly. Headline have said how she has ballooned back to her weight and, ‘she’s the fat girl off TV’, but really she is just being compared to her previous.

Yo Yo dieting its self is very harmful for your body, your body is going from one extreme of eating large amounts to eating nothing back to eating more again so the strain on your body is extremely unhealthy. Natalie sadly will have regained everything in fat as her weight decreased so rapidly leaving a small muscular frame and her weight has been regained so quickly it will be stored as fat.

I think the pressure of the good press she had because of the weight loss inspired her but once she realised it was near impossible to keep the weight off she relaxed and settled down, it seems she is naturally a curvy girl so she should learn to love her curves like we all do!

If you wear one colour this season it has to be purple. Vibrant, sexy & powerful, The Autumn/Winter violet trend is anything but shrinking.

A huge hit on the runways, being utilised in the collections of many designers including Versace and Alberta Ferretti (pictured). It has also been adopted by the high street in both fashion and homeware and is sure to brighten up the colder months.

According to the rules of feng shui it also symbolises prosperity - which certainly can't hurt at the moment!

Although bold, purple is very versatile. Mix it with greys & blacks for less of a statement look - or go all out purple to stand out from the crowd.

America's First Lady has Style

Being across the pond in the UK has done little to remove me from the buzz surrounding the US election, and the historic win of the first black president.

Stealing as many column inches as her husband, if only in the fashion world, is America's new first lady - Michelle Obama.

The general consensus is that the woman has style. Mrs Obama has gorgeous curves which she acccentuates perfectly, with no help from a personal stylist, so we are told.

Mrs Obama has been applauded for her fashion choices during the campaign, with women across the world seeking out copies of her smart, colourful dresses and well-cut skirt suits. She recently told Jay Leno that she shopped for most of her clothes online.

On election night I have to say that I think Mrs Obama suffered a rare lapse of taste. Wearing a red and black scoop-neck dress by Narciso Rodriguez for the historic moment, was a decision that has sparked instant debate among the fashion-focused.

Nobody gets it right every time so i'm sure it wont be long before Mrs Obama is back on her fashion pedestal and leading the world in power dressing with style for the modern woman.
